Keeping Your Fireplace Safe and Functional

A fireplace is more than a source of warmth. For many Northern New Jersey families, it is the heart of the home, the place where you gather on cold winter evenings, where stockings hang during the holidays, and where memories are made. But a damaged fireplace is not just a cosmetic concern; it is a safety hazard that requires prompt, professional attention.

At Santa's Sweepers LLC, we provide comprehensive fireplace repair services for homeowners across Bergen, Essex, Hudson, Passaic, Morris, Union, Sussex, and Warren counties. From cracked firebricks to stuck dampers, we handle it all.

Common Fireplace Problems

Cracked or Damaged Firebricks

The firebricks lining the inside of your firebox are designed to withstand extreme heat. Over time, however, they can crack, chip, or crumble. Damaged firebricks expose the combustible materials behind them to dangerous heat levels. We remove damaged bricks and replace them with new firebricks rated for high temperatures, restoring the firebox to safe operating condition.

Deteriorated Firebox Mortar

The mortar between firebricks is a special, heat-resistant compound called refractory mortar. When this mortar deteriorates, gaps form between the bricks, allowing heat and potentially flames to reach areas they should not. We repoint firebox mortar joints using proper refractory materials.

Damaged or Stuck Damper

The damper controls airflow in your chimney. A stuck damper wastes energy by allowing heated or cooled air to escape up the flue when the fireplace is not in use. A rusted or broken damper may not open fully, causing smoke to enter your home when you light a fire. We repair or replace dampers, including upgrading to energy-efficient top-sealing dampers.

Smoke Problems

If your fireplace sends smoke into your living room instead of up the chimney, the problem could be caused by several factors: an improperly sized flue, a blocked chimney, negative air pressure in the home, or a damaged smoke chamber. We diagnose the root cause and implement the appropriate solution.

Cracked or Damaged Hearth

The hearth is the floor of the fireplace and the area extending into the room. Cracks in the hearth can be both a cosmetic and structural issue. We repair hearth stones and, when needed, replace sections to restore both safety and appearance.

Gas Fireplace Repair

In addition to traditional wood-burning fireplaces, many Northern NJ homes have gas fireplaces or gas log inserts. Common gas fireplace issues include pilot light problems, faulty thermocouples, clogged burners, and foggy glass. Our team services gas fireplaces as well, ensuring safe and reliable operation.
