What Is Chimney Relining?

The chimney liner is the interior lining of your chimney flue. It serves three critical purposes: it contains the combustion byproducts (including carbon monoxide), it protects the chimney structure from heat and corrosion, and it helps create the proper draft for efficient fireplace or furnace operation. When the liner is damaged, cracked, or missing, your chimney becomes a safety hazard.

Many older homes in Northern New Jersey were built with clay tile liners or, in some cases, no liner at all. Clay tile liners, while durable, can crack over time due to thermal shock or the freeze-thaw cycles common in our region. A cracked liner allows heat and gases to reach the combustible materials in your walls, creating a serious fire risk.

Types of Chimney Liners We Install

Santa's Sweepers offers several relining options to match your specific needs and budget:

Stainless Steel Liners

Stainless steel liners are the most popular choice for chimney relining. They are incredibly durable, resistant to corrosion, and suitable for all fuel types (wood, gas, and oil). We use high-quality, UL-listed stainless steel liners that are designed to last for decades. Installation involves inserting a flexible or rigid stainless steel liner down the full length of your chimney and connecting it to your appliance or firebox.

Aluminum Liners

Aluminum liners are a cost-effective option for gas appliances only. They are lightweight, easy to install, and work well in situations where a gas furnace or water heater vents through the chimney. Aluminum liners are not suitable for wood-burning fireplaces or oil-fired appliances.

Signs You Need a New Chimney Liner

The Relining Process

Our relining process begins with a thorough inspection of your existing chimney and liner. We measure the flue dimensions, assess the chimney's condition, and recommend the best liner type and size for your specific setup. The installation typically takes one day and includes:

Why Relining Is Important for NJ Homes

Northern New Jersey has a large stock of older homes, particularly in communities like Montclair, Ridgewood, Glen Ridge, Maplewood, Morristown, and Summit. Many of these homes have original chimneys that are 60 to 100 years old with clay tile liners that have reached the end of their useful life. Relining is often the most practical and affordable way to make these chimneys safe again without a complete rebuild.

Even newer homes sometimes need relining. Chimney fires, improper fuel use, and natural wear can all damage a liner well before its expected lifespan. If your chimney inspection reveals liner damage, relining is the recommended solution.
