Answers to Common Chimney Questions

The NFPA recommends annual chimney inspections and cleaning as needed. If you use your fireplace regularly during the winter, annual cleaning is recommended to prevent creosote buildup and ensure safe operation.

How long does a chimney cleaning take?

A standard chimney cleaning and inspection takes approximately 45 minutes to 1 hour, depending on the condition of the chimney and the level of buildup.

Do I need to be home during the service?

Yes, we ask that a homeowner or authorized adult be present during our visit. This allows us to walk you through our findings and discuss any recommendations.

Is chimney cleaning messy?

Not at all. We use professional drop cloths and HEPA-filtered vacuums to contain all soot and debris. Your home will be just as clean when we leave as when we arrived.

When is the best time to schedule chimney service?

Late summer and early fall are ideal times, before the busy heating season begins. That said, we offer chimney services year-round and are happy to accommodate your schedule any time of year.

What is creosote and why is it dangerous?

Creosote is a dark, tar-like substance that accumulates inside your chimney flue when you burn wood. It is highly flammable and is the leading cause of chimney fires in the United States. Regular chimney cleaning removes creosote and keeps your home safe.

Can I clean my chimney myself?

While some basic maintenance can be done by homeowners, professional chimney cleaning requires specialized tools and training to be done safely and thoroughly. A professional cleaning also includes an inspection that can catch problems you might miss.

How do I know if my chimney needs repair?

Look for signs like white staining on bricks (efflorescence), crumbling mortar, water stains near the chimney, a leaning chimney, or pieces of brick on the ground. If you notice any of these signs, contact us for an inspection.
