Mortar joints between bricks are designed to last about 25 to 30 years. After that, they begin to crumble and recede, allowing water to penetrate the chimney structure. Tuckpointing involves removing the old, damaged mortar and replacing it with fresh mortar matched to your chimney's original color and composition. This is one of the most cost-effective chimney repairs available.
When water enters the brick and freezes, it causes the face of the brick to pop off or flake away. This is called spalling, and it is very common in New Jersey's freeze-thaw climate. If left untreated, spalling weakens the chimney structure and can eventually lead to collapse.
