Fireplace Safety Tips for Northern NJ Winters
Stay Warm and Stay Safe This Season
Published February 23, 2026
There is nothing quite like a crackling fire on a cold Northern NJ winter evening. But fireplaces demand respect. According to the National Fire Protection Association, heating equipment is the second leading cause of home fires in the United States. Most of these fires are preventable with proper maintenance and safe practices. Here are essential fireplace safety tips every NJ homeowner should follow.
Before You Light the First Fire of the Season
- Schedule an annual inspection: Have your chimney inspected by a professional before the heating season begins. This catches problems like cracked flue liners, blockages, and creosote buildup before they become dangerous.
- Check the damper: Open and close the damper to make sure it moves freely. A stuck damper can cause smoke and carbon monoxide to fill your home.
- Test your smoke and CO detectors: Make sure all detectors have fresh batteries and are functioning properly. NJ law requires CO detectors on every level of your home.
- Clear the area: Move furniture, curtains, decorations, and any combustible materials at least three feet from the fireplace.
- Check the firebox: Look for cracked firebricks, missing mortar, or signs of damage. If you see anything concerning, call a professional before using the fireplace.
Safe Fire-Building Practices
- Always open the damper fully before lighting a fire and keep it open until all embers are completely extinguished.
- Burn only seasoned hardwood. Seasoned wood has been dried for at least six months to a year. It burns hotter, produces less smoke, and creates less creosote than green or wet wood.
- Never burn treated lumber, plywood, cardboard, or trash. These materials release toxic chemicals and can cause rapid creosote buildup or chimney fires.
- Start with small fires. A small, hot fire is safer and more efficient than a large, smoldering one. Build up gradually.
- Use a fireplace screen. A sturdy metal screen prevents sparks and embers from popping out onto your floor or carpet.
- Never leave a fire unattended. Make sure the fire is fully extinguished before going to bed or leaving the house.
What NOT to Burn
New Jersey homeowners should never burn these materials in their fireplace:
- Pine, spruce, or other softwoods (excessive creosote production)
- Wet or green wood (poor combustion, excessive smoke)
- Treated or painted wood (toxic fumes)
- Cardboard boxes or wrapping paper (uncontrolled flames, spark hazard)
- Plastic of any kind (toxic fumes, chimney damage)
- Artificial fire logs in combination with real wood (designed for solo use only)
Ash Removal Safety
Fireplace ashes can remain hot enough to start a fire for up to three days after your last burn. When removing ashes:
- Wait at least 24 hours after your last fire
- Use a metal ash bucket with a tight-fitting lid
- Store the ash bucket outside on a non-combustible surface, away from your home and any structures
- Never use a vacuum cleaner to remove ashes (fire hazard and filter damage)
- Wait a full 72 hours before disposing of ashes in your regular trash
Gas Fireplace Safety
Gas fireplaces are popular in Northern NJ homes for their convenience. While they produce less creosote than wood-burning fireplaces, they still require maintenance:
- Have the unit inspected annually to check gas connections, the burner, and venting
- Keep the glass front clean for efficient heat transfer
- Never block the air intake or exhaust vents
- If you smell gas, turn off the unit, open windows, evacuate, and call your gas company
- Keep children and pets away from the glass front, which can reach temperatures hot enough to cause severe burns
When to Call a Professional
Contact a chimney professional immediately if you notice:
- Smoke entering your living space when the fireplace is in use
- A strong odor from the fireplace (even when not in use)
- White staining on the exterior chimney masonry
- Crumbling mortar or loose bricks
- A rumbling sound or dense smoke during a fire (possible chimney fire, call 911 first)
